The seat of Polish kings, levelled in 1944 and rebuilt brick-by-brick from paintings and rubble — so every gilded room is both a restoration and a quiet act of defiance. The Canaletto Room alone is worth the ticket; its cityscapes were the blueprint for rebuilding Warsaw itself.

Stalin's "gift" to Warsaw and still the tallest thing for miles — a Socialist-Realist monolith locals love to hate. The 30th-floor viewing terrace is the one honest reason to go up: it's the only skyline view of Warsaw that includes the Palace itself, which is the point.

Warsaw's grandest green: 76 hectares of canals, an 18th-century palace floating on its own lake, free-roaming peacocks and red squirrels that will mug you for a chestnut. In summer, free Chopin piano recitals play under the monument every Sunday — bring a blanket and stay for the whole thing.

POLIN — Museum of the History of Polish Jews

Anielewicza 6 · on the former ghetto site

A multi-award winner that tells 1,000 years of Polish-Jewish life — not just its end — through a hand-painted timber synagogue ceiling and one of Europe's best-staged permanent exhibitions. It stands where the Warsaw Ghetto was, opposite the monument, which gives every room its weight. Budget three hours; you'll want them.

Warsaw Uprising Museum

A former tram power station now wired to a beating-heart soundtrack, telling the 63 days of the 1944 uprising hour by hour. Children's letters, sewer recreations and a full-size replica Liberator bomber pull the history off the wall — it's loud, immersive and unsparing. The single most affecting museum in the city.

Wilanów Palace

Warsaw's "Polish Versailles" — a royal summer residence that survived the war intact, so unlike most of the city it's the real thing, not a rebuild. The baroque interiors are rich, but the formal gardens are the reason to make the trip out: rose terraces, an orangery and, in winter, the city's prettiest light festival.

Old Town Market Square

Rynek Starego Miasta · heart of the Old Town

The most photographed square in the country and, like almost all of it, a meticulous post-war reconstruction — which is exactly the UNESCO citation: not for being old, but for the act of rebuilding it. The Mermaid statue at the centre is the city's emblem; the painted façades around her are best at golden hour with a paczek from a corner bakery.
